Doily Square

 12 inch square

Materials
Size 7" steel hook and size 10 crochet thread
Size G hook and 4 ply yarn of choice

 

Instructions:  

Insert square
With small hook and crochet thread, ch 4, join with a sl st to form ring

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (stands for dc), 2 dc in ring, (ch 3 , 3 dc in ring) 3 times; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3

Rnd 2: Sl st in next 2 dc,sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 3 (stands for dc), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp as ch 3- beginning corner space made,
ch 1; *( 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 space, ch-1; rep from * around, join with slip stitch to top of chain 3...
At this point you have four corner spaces with ch 3...and four ch 1 spaces.

Rnd 3: Sl st in next 2 dc and ch 3 sp...ch 3,  2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in beginning ch 3 space. Ch 1, three dc in ch 1 sp, ch 1, 
repeat around, sl st in top of beginning ch 3.

Rnds 4-6: Sl st in next 2 dc, sl st in  next ch-3 sp, ch 3 (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same space, ch 1, ( 3 dc in next ch 1 sp) ch 1,
until next corner...then 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc for corner space, repeat until end and sl st in third chain of beginning ch 3.  
After row 6 fasten off.

With G hook and yarn, ch 5 and sl st to form ring.

Rnd 1:  Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, (ch 3,3 dc in ring) 3 times.  Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc, ch 3, and 2 dc in next ch-3 sp. Dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in next ch 3 sp. Rep around, You should have  four ch 3 spaces.

Rnd 3:  Ch 3, dc in each dc across to corner space, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in corner space) around.  Do not fasten off.

Rnd 4:  Place insert square over yarn square with right sides up and matching corner  sps.  To join squares-ch 3(stands for dc), dc through both 3rd sp of 
thread square and next dc of yarn square held tog, *(dc in next dc of yarn square only, dc through both next sp or thread square 
and next dc of yarn square) repeat until corner, dc in corner sps of both squares held tog,(dc, ch 3, dc) in same corner space 
of yarn square only, repeat around ending with sl st to top of beg-ch 3.

Rnd 5: Rep rnd 3.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same st as join. (*ch 3, sk next dc, sc in next dc**; repeat from * to** to corner sp, (ch 3, sc in corner sp)twice: rep this to end..
ch 3 join with sl st in beg sc, fasten off.

If you need 6 inch squares, just don't do the last row rnd 6.  
For a twelve inch square just increase the rounds.

This is really an easy pattern once you get through the first one...LOL...
Have fun. the thread portion on this pattern makes a traditional granny design.
Get creative and use other motifs.  The joining is done in the same manner.

TIPS!  
The biggest tip I can give is to be certain you adjust your hook or the stitch height
(changing from a DC to HDC or SC) if needed so that when you attach the thread portion
your square remains flat.
